Established on May 5, 1949 by the Treaty of London, the Council of Europe is an international organization which brings together approximately 675 million nationals of 46 Member States. Its mission is to work for peace, democracy and respect for international law in the world.

It is from him that the flag of the European Union (EU) as well as its anthem come from, which is why the Council of Europe is often confused with other bodies of the European Union. The Council of Europe, for example, should not be confused with the European Council, which brings together the leaders of the member states to debate and take decisions at EU level.

French and English are the two official languages of the Council of Europe. Its statutory bodies, the Committee of Ministers and the Parliamentary Assembly, form a quadrilogue with the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities and the Conference of International Non-Governmental Organisations; they also work in German, Italian, Russian and Turkish.
